What Is Block Paving?

Block paving is made using individual paving blocks formed from concrete, clay or natural stone such as sandstone or granite. These blocks are available in a wide variety of sizes, colours and surface finishes, allowing for highly customised designs.

When installed correctly, block paving is extremely strong and capable of supporting regular vehicle traffic. The choice of laying pattern also plays a key role in strength and durability.

STAGGERED PAVING

This style is commonly created using Tegula-style blocks in mixed sizes, ranging from medium to large units. The varied layout adds character and depth, making it a popular option for driveways and patios alike.

HERRINGBONE PAVING

Herringbone remains one of the strongest and most widely used block paving patterns for driveways. It can be laid at either 45° or 90°, offering excellent interlock and resistance to movement under vehicle weight.

STRETCHER BOND PAVING

The stretcher bond pattern mimics traditional brickwork, with each block offset halfway over the next. This design is commonly chosen for patios and pathways, providing a neat and uniform appearance.

BASKET WEAVE PAVING

Basket weave patterns are typically used for decorative purposes on smaller areas such as garden paths or patio sections. Due to limited load strength, this style is not recommended for driveways or high-traffic zones.
